In his book "Keep Sharp: Build a Better Brain at Any Age" (2020), Sanjay Gupta, a neurosurgeon, shares his expertise on how to achieve good well-being for your brain via the "five pillars of brain health." Based on his recommendations backed up with scientific evidence, here are 5 ways to keep your creative mind sharp:
1. Move
According to research, exercise improves blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain and effectively reduces stress. A study from UCLA says that exercise also stimulates chemicals in the brain that affect the health and grow of brain cells (Armstrong 2018; Godman, 2014).
2. Discover
To make your mind sharp, it's important to learn something new, advises neurosurgeon Sanjay Gupta. To do so, he recommends activities like reading books outside your interests or expertise, joining classes or educational groups, or even learning a new language.
3. Relax
Relaxation comes in many forms. So one of the most healthy ways to take care of your body and brain is by resting or sleeping. Gupta says that "poor sleep can lead to impaired memory and that chronic stress can impair your ability to learn and adapt to new situations."
4. Nourish
Eat like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a peasant, Gupta adds. He also suggests another diet method for a health brain, the SHARP method: Slash the sugar, Hydrate smartly, Add more omega-3s from natural sources, Reduce portions, and Plan meals ahead.
5. Connect
Good relationships are proven to contribute to a happier and healthier life. Research also suggests that relationships can improve brain plasticity (the ability to change and adapt responses based on internal or external stimuli) and cognitive abilities.
